Fellow Kansan,

Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter! I’m pleased to update you on my work in Washington, D.C. and the First District of Kansas.

It is an honor to represent Kansans in the Big First District in the 118th Congress. I do not serve in Congress to be a caretaker in the slow demise of America – I serve to fight and work to make it stronger, and I believe our brightest days are yet to come.

Yours in service,

The Week Ahead

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives will consider another two appropriation bills aimed at stewarding taxpayer dollars wisely:

H.R. 4820, the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, which would prioritize our nation’s transportation systems, safety programs, and housing assistance for vulnerable Americans while reining in wasteful spending; and

H.R. 4664, the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, which would cut bureaucratic red tape, end costly initiatives regarding arbitrary climate goals, defund President Biden’s IRS watchdogs, and prohibit taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.

We need to reduce and reprioritize government spending, secure the southern border, and end the weaponization of the federal government. House Republicans have now advanced nine of the twelve appropriation bills for fiscal year 2024. This is a step in the right direction to getting our country back on track.

Also happening this week, the House Small Business Committee will hold a Full Committee Hearing - “Burdensome Regulations: Examining the Effects of Department of Energy (DOE) Rulemaking on America’s Job Creators.”

  • Kansas Soybean Association
  • USA Rice

Honoring America's Heroes on Veterans Day

This Saturday is Veterans Day, when we pause to honor the service of the people who put their lives on the line for our freedom. Since 1776, the service of America’s brave men and women in uniform has carried us forward and shaped our nation. I’m reminded of when Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this – that he would lay down his life for his friends.”

America is the greatest country on earth today because of the sacrifices of the service men and women whom we honor this week. They risked their lives to protect and defend the ideals that we hold dear – liberty and justice for all. They came from different backgrounds, voted for different political candidates, went to different churches, and held different ideologies and personal beliefs, but they came together around one idea - freedom.

I am proud to have served on the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, and as the member of Congress for the Big First District, I'm proud to advocate for our veterans and active service members. I am committed to fighting for policies that give veterans the highest quality of resources and support, and my office is always ready to assist Kansas veterans and their families.

Thank you, veterans, for your service and dedication to our great nation.

Happy Veterans Day!

If you or a loved one are a U.S. veteran and are seeking assistance with the VA, please contact my office. My staff and I are here and ready to assist you.

Blocking EPA Overreach, Cutting Wasteful Spending

Kansans in the Big First are sick and tired of seeing their dollars wasted, the southern border left in chaos, and the federal government weaponized against them.

Last week, I voted to fight government overreach and cut wasteful government spending. These appropriation bills support Congressional oversight investigations and rein in overreaching Environmental Protection Agency regulations like President Biden’s listing of the lesser prairie-chicken.

Condemning Hamas and other Terrorist Groups

Israel is America’s strongest ally in the Middle East and the region’s only functioning democracy. We must continue to support Israel, condemn all attacks on Israel's sovereignty, and hold the Biden Administration accountable for its continued deals with those who support Hamas. Last week, I voted to advance a comprehensive response to the unthinkable evil carried about by Hamas against Israel and strengthens America’s national security in the process.

U.S. Department of Commerce Removing Moroccan Phosphate Fertilizer Tariffs

Two weeks ago, I sent a letter to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo urging her to address the cost of fertilizer. Last week, the U.S. Department of Commerce stated that it intends to remove tariffs on Moroccan phosphate fertilizer products, which will help provide relief to American farmers. I’m glad Secretary Raimondo heard me - American farmers work hard to keep us all fed, and they shouldn’t have to put their livelihoods in jeopardy when purchasing fertilizer to grow their crops.

2023 Military Academy Nomination Day

Rep. Mann with the 2023 military academy nomination applicants.

It is always an honor to host the military academy selection committee and potential military academy candidates in the childhood hometown of five-star U.S. Army General, President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Last week was no different. These students reflect the best of Kansas, and their aspirations to serve our country give me hope for a bright future in America. I enjoyed getting to know them, and I wish them all the best.

I also owe a debt of gratitude to the selection committee for lending their expertise and unique perspectives to the selection process. The five-person panel included:

  • Mary Eisenhower, former President and CEO of People to People International and granddaughter of President Eisenhower
  • AJ Kuhle, U.S. Air Force Academy alumnus and U.S. Air Force veteran
  • Joseph McCarville, West Point alumnus, retired Reno County District Court Judge, and U.S. Army veteran
  • Michael Utz, retired Garden City Police Chief and U.S. Air Force veteran
  • Lt. General (Ret.) Perry Wiggins, former Commanding General of United States Army North and Ft. Riley’s 1st Infantry Division
