What to Expect in 2024

We?ve got some things new, but first the tried and true? The same quality programming and networking you?ve come to expect from the premier historic preservation conference in the Lone Star State is in store for you in 2024. Presented again by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission in partnership with Phoenix I Restoration and Construction, LLC, the full schedule [ [link removed] ] will feature over 100 expert speakers from across Texas and the U.S, more than 60 sessions, workshops, and tours, several renowned keynote speakers, and lots of fun and interesting activities that we?re still planning and will announce at a later date!

We?re also offering a hybrid conference again, with the option to attend the full conference either in person or virtually. We hope you?ll join us in Austin for the energy and camaraderie of our in-person event. But we understand that not everyone can make it here. If you join us online, you?ll be able to stream all conference sessions, and the recordings will be archived for viewing up to 60 days after the conference.

Recordings will be available to all attendees?if you choose in person or virtual, you?ll be able to watch presentations you missed because sessions were running concurrently.

So What's New?

We?re excited about moving the conference to a new time and place in 2024. Real Places traditionally happened in late January or early February and, while that was fine for several years, the last couple events were impacted by wintry weather.

We cannot guarantee good weather by moving it to early April?and the conference will take place regardless of weather?but it is much less likely that there will be snow or ice. April temperatures in Austin are usually very pleasant, with an average high of 80 degrees and low of 59.

We?ll be at a new venue, too! Real Places 2024 will take place at the *Renaissance Austin Hotel*. As the conference has grown over the years, we?ve had to move to larger venues. The Renaissance Austin should provide us with ample room for growth.

Something else that?s new for 2024 is the addition of ?lightning sessions.? These short breakout sessions are intended to provide introductory information that is crucial for new hires and new volunteers. Scheduled for 30 minutes only, including time for audience questions, they will be led by THC staff on topics such as preservation ordinances, historical markers, historic resources surveys, grant opportunities, the Section 106 review process, and historic preservation tax credits.

Act Now to Save!

"Save up to $150 on registration by taking advantage of the early-bird rate, which only lasts through December 15!"

As always, Courthouse Stewards, students, and organizations registering multiple people at the same time can receive additional discounts. There is also a la carte pricing for single-day registrations and special events.
