The authors identify three classes of states, finding twenty-nine states with predominantly harmful laws, fifteen states with predominantly protective laws, and seven states with a mix of both.
They found that age-adjusted premature mortality rates overall were highest in those states with predominantly harmful laws, and that states with more protective laws were associated with lower premature mortality rates overall than states with more harmful laws.
