Why this matters: Republican extremism has reached new heights with the election of new House Speaker Mike Johnson — an ultraconservative, anti-abortion Trump ally who voted against certifying the 2020 election results and called for cuts to Medicare and Social Security. You can bet we'll see a similar agenda from Senate Republicans if they regain the majority.
