This halloween, the only thing scarier than the monsters at your door are the social media companies preying on your kids

Dear Neighbor,

Children across the world are growing up spending significant time online, and recent research paints a stark picture — revealing increased rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm among children and young adults due to increased social media use. Social media usage has such a negative effect on youth mental health, in fact, that the US Surgeon General issued an advisory in May declaring it unsafe for kids.

For years we’ve implemented safeguards to shield youth from things that are damaging to them, such as tobacco. Social media can be just as harmful, and it's crucial that big tech companies no longer circumvent sensible regulations designed to protect their youngest users.

I’ve introduced two pieces of legislation tackling these issues and aimed at making the internet a safer place for our kids:

Bill #1: Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act

Bill #2: The New York Child Data Protection Act

I’m geared up for this fight because I know we are on the right side of trying to protect young people. Please take a minute to sign and share our petition to support these bills, and chip in what you can to help us fight back against Big Tech’s lies.

Oh, and Happy Halloween!
