Well, they finally did it. My GOP colleagues in the House landed on a candidate who could scrape up enough votes to win the Speakership - Rep. Mike Johnson. Johnson may have been flying under the radar up until this point, but he’s just as extreme - and just as dangerous to our democracy - as Jim Jordan, who he calls his mentor. Here’s why we need to be on high alert going forward: -
Speaker Johnson is a leading election denier and one of the main architects of the efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
- He cheered the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and believes abortion should be banned without exceptions - and criminalized.
- He opposes LGBTQ+ civil rights and gender-affirming care.
- He wants to slash essential programs that millions of Americans rely on, like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
Mike Johnson is unfit to lead the House of Representatives, and I’m going to do everything in my power to fight back against his extreme, right-wing beliefs here in Congress. But if we want to make real, lasting progress, we need to vote out every single Republican who put their party before our country.

I don’t know if there was ever going to be a “good” GOP candidate for House Speaker, but I can easily say that electing Trump’s handpicked acolyte is not what’s best for the American people or our democracy. What comes next is up to us - let’s get to work. -Sara |
