John, I want to lay bare the facts in the fight for voting rights — the same facts I laid bare when it last came up on the Senate floor.

If you are already prepared to do your part — before our October 31 end-of-month deadline, before this next election, before our next opportunity to pass voting rights at the federal level — I am respectfully asking you to chip in $10. [[link removed]]

If you need more convincing, read on — this is an important issue, and I have much to say about it.

My family roots run deep, from places like Monroe, Louisiana. Alabama. North Carolina. I know my family story.

I know the challenges of Jim Crow.

Thank God we are not in a time of Jim Crow.

But I have a hard time listening to people who want to talk about this issue and don’t want to talk about facts.

In the US today, it’s more difficult for the average African American to vote than the average white American.

Black voters are forced to wait twice as long in line as white voters.

During the 2016 election, among residents of all Black neighborhoods, 74% were more likely to spend more than 30 minutes at their polling place relative to white neighborhoods.

In 2018, Latino voters waited 46% longer to vote than white voters, Black voters 45%. According to the Brennan Center, both groups were more likely than white voters to wait in the longest lines on election day.

Imagine that you’re working a job, taking care of young kids, and now because of efforts to make voting more difficult, you have to give up a day’s salary in Georgia to wait 10 hours in line to vote. You want to talk about a modern-day poll tax? That is a poll tax. Yet Republicans are saying race is not an issue when it comes to voting rights.

Since Shelby v. Holder eviscerated the Voting Rights Act that Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner died for, Black voters in Georgia waited nearly 10 times longer on average after polling places were closed.

What country are we when a certain minority and predominantly minority communities have to wait 10 times as long to vote?

Since the Shelby decision, Texas has closed 750 polling sites. 542 of them are in the 50 counties with the fastest-growing Black and Latino populations.

My dad’s home state of North Carolina is one of the most affected by poll closures. There have been 158 poll closures in 40 counties with large Black communities. African American voter participation dropped 16%.

This isn’t about voter protection.

It’s not about voter fraud - you’re more likely to be struck by lightning than you are to find an instance of voter fraud.

It’s about concerted efforts to make it harder for certain communities to vote.

It’s on us to continue telling the truth, to call out efforts to discourage democratic participation, and we will win this fight.

I don’t know how long it will take. But that will be determined by how dedicated we are to the principles of this democracy. We must live in a nation where everyone is equal in the experience they have to participate in democracy.

It is the bedrock of our nation, the foundation of our country, and it has cracks we need to repair, and whether we kneel to pray or stand tall, let’s continue the work of this democracy so that freedom and justice roll down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.

With love and gratitude,

Cory
