John,
The House Republican caucus is in crisis. But just because they’ve gone weeks without choosing a Speaker (with no end in sight) doesn’t mean that they’re any less dangerous.
If Congress doesn’t act, the government will shut down on November 17th. Congress has spent 21 of the 45 days they gave themselves since the September 30th deadline deposing Kevin McCarthy, then failing to replace him.
With an abbreviated timeline before the next deadline, Republicans will grasp for any fig leaf to claim that they enacted spending cuts, even if they couldn’t manage to pass any legislation while fighting among themselves.
A dangerous fig leaf is lurking in Rep. Jodey Arrington’s budget proposal: He calls it a “fiscal commission.” The White House calls it a “death panel for Medicare and Social Security.”
As we race toward another government shutdown, Democrats might be tempted to give Republicans their commission. We can’t let our Social Security system pay the price for Republican dysfunction!
Social Security Works is on Capitol Hill every day making sure that every member of Congress knows: A vote for a fiscal commission is a vote to destroy Social Security and Medicare! Rush a donation today to keep up the pressure!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
