Former White House adviser Mark Mills was in Jackson this week, speaking at a packed event that we hosted jointly with Bigger Pie Forum.

It was wonderful to see several members of our state legislature and Public Service Commissioners attend and ask questions.

Packed public meeting, pertinent questions
The federal government is determined to reduce America’s carbon dioxide emissions, encouraging us to switch from hydrocarbons to renewable energy. But what are the implications?

Mark Mills, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, has an encyclopedic knowledge, and he laid out the bare facts about what switching to renewables would actually mean.

America will need to install thousands of new giant wind turbines not every year, but each week, if we are to meet the renewable targets Washington DC wants.

At the same time, he suggested, we will need to cover a vast area in solar paneling and build dozens of new nuclear plants each year.
How to ensure low cost, reliable energy for Mississippi?
Transitioning to renewables might seem like a bright idea in DC. Unless the federal government knows how to change the laws of physics, they are simply not going to be able to transition the way they want.

In order to make Americans switch to driving electric vehicles a vast number of charging stations will have to be built to replace gas stations. Each of these charging stations will eventually require the same amount of electricity as a steel mill.

Mark Mills showed that many politicians simply have not thought through the implications of the policies they want to impose on the rest of us.

In recent years, Mississippi has been successful at attracting inward investment. One of the reasons manufacturers chose our state is low cost, reliable energy. We need to keep things that way.

Mills cited the example of Germany as a warning. Politicians in Europe rushed into renewable energy, and in doing so pushed up the cost of energy. This has effectively priced the German economy out of world markets, resulting in a loss of manufacturing capacity.
