[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Hey Friend,

Mental health is an issue that touches the lives of every American–including my own family. Millions of people are struggling with their mental health, but are either unable to access or afford care, or are afraid of the stigma that seeking mental health care brings.

That’s why earlier this week I launched the Bipartisan Mental Health Caucus in the U.S. Senate, alongside my colleagues Thom Tillis, Tina Smith, and Joni Ernst.

There’s been a lot of good work done in Congress to address America’s mental health crisis, like the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or the community-based mental health services in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

But Friend, there’s still a lot of work to do to make sure every American is able to live a happy, healthy life.

In 2021, 1 out of 3 of Americans with a serious mental illness did not receive any form of mental health care.

That’s partially because there’s a nationwide shortage of trained mental health professionals, and even when treatment is available, it’s too often prohibitively expensive or inconvenient.

And it’s also partially because people are afraid of getting stigmatized or looked at differently because of their mental health struggles.

Together, we can address the mental health crisis facing our nation, and improve the quality of life for all Americans.

But it’s only going to happen if we break down the stigma around mental health, and make sure that all Americans are able to get the support they need. Thanks for reading, and for supporting this important work.
