Friend, imagine, if you will:

You’re the superintendent of an underfunded public school district, and it’s time to make staffing choices.

You have enough in the budget to hire either an art teacher or a special education teacher. Which do you choose?

Most of us would probably do the same thing Clairton City School District Superintendent Tamara Allen-Thomas did, as she mentioned in her testimony last week — you’d hire a special education teacher, and unfortunately, cut your art program in the process.

It’s an unfair choice that countless educators across the Commonwealth are forced to make because we’re not funding our public schools fairly or fully, and it’s actively taking away opportunities from our students.

It’s time to do right by our public schools. Chip in so we can put pen to paper in the Legislature and get our students, teachers, and public schools the resources they need to thrive.

Impossible choices like these are now the norm for Pennsylvania’s public school teachers and staff. It’s unacceptable, and we must work together to uphold our constitutional obligation to provide a fairly and fully funded public school education to young Pennsylvanians.

Onward together,

Lindsey Williams
