This weekend, Minnesota’s Star Tribune published a fantastic editorial sounding the alarm about a new plan from Franconia Minerals to conduct exploratory drilling in the watershed of the Boundary Waters. The editorial calls on the state of Minnesota to act now to protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from the ongoing threat of copper-nickel mining proposals. Can you imagine a mine underneath a lake that flows directly into the Boundary Waters? Twin Metals recently submitted a request to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to undertake exploratory drilling on state land on the shores of Birch Lake.
