Vouchers don't work. And Texans don't want them.

Nathan Johnson is the Democratic State Senator from Dallas (Texas Senate District 16). Our emails are the best way to make sure you stay updated on what Nathan’s working on at the State Legislature and how we’re building a future that all Texans can be proud of, but if you’d no longer like to hear from us, please click here ([link removed]) to unsubscribe.

Dear John,

A legislative colleague explained to me when I was still pretty new, We use special sessions to pass all the *&#% that was too stupid to pass in the regular session. Hmmm...

Republican leadership and their cadre of billionaire voucher mongers have been trying to pass vouchers for years. They tried again this last regular legislative session. As before, they failed.

Hence this obnoxious special session.

There’s no emergency that requires us to be here. There’s no change in what we considered during the regular session. Voucher mongers: You lost. Come back in 2025 (and lose again). That’s the deal.

But no, with the Republican primary in their plans, the voucher mongers want to use the leverage of a special session to force through what they’ve tried and failed to push through before.

There’s a reason vouchers haven’t (and can’t) pass both chambers. Vouchers don’t work. People (Republican and Democratic people) don’t like them. Meanwhile there’s a lot we should be doing for public education.

At a press conference held earlier this week, I explained (okay, maybe I was a little animated) in more detail why vouchers actually take us off course, and what we really should be doing to raise up our schools and our kids. Please take a minute to watch. ([link removed])

I will never vote for a school voucher program — and that's made me a target for the billionaire voucher mongers and their political allies. They have the potential to spend millions to try and prevent my reelection to the Texas Senate. I need your help today to push back and win. Please support my reelection campaign now, so we can keep legislating for the public good. ([link removed])
