Austin Assembly Rallies Support For Asylum Seekers
 
More than 300 people attended the Austin Jews for Refugees Assembly to support the rights and dignity of those seeking safety in the United States. The assembly brought refugee organizations like HIAS together with local officials and members of the Austin community to learn how to help refugees, asylum seekers, and the programs that support them. Lawsuit Settlement Will Help Reunite Refugee Families
 
The U.S. government entered into a major settlement with plaintiffs in Jewish Family Service v. Trump, a lawsuit filed by a HIAS affiliate in 2017. The settlement requires the government to expedite the refugee resettlement applications of more than 300 people affected by one of the Trump administration’s bans on certain refugees entering the United States. Read more about the settlement.
Entrepreneurship School Is Now in Session
 
A group of 14 women in Peru became the first to graduate from a HIAS program that teaches both entrepreneurship and how to recognize and escape gender-based violence. “This school of entrepreneurship helps women understand that we [have] worth...for the simple fact of being women,” said one of the graduates.

HIAS Responds to Emergency in Chad
 
In the last three months more than 16,000 Darfuri refugees have poured over the Sudan-Chad border due to renewed inter-ethnic violence. HIAS is on the ground responding, providing core relief and psychological first aid. Learn more about the developing situation.

  • Another Important Win in HIAS v. Trump In January, HIAS won a preliminary injunction to block the Trump administration’s executive order allowing state and local officials to refuse refugee resettlement. This month, a federal appeals court denied the government’s motion to expedite its appeal, meaning the injunction will remain in place for at least several more months.
     
  • Accenture Volunteers Help HIAS Clients On the Job Hunt HIAS is teaming up with Accenture to help refugees in the United States find jobs. Accenture employees have helped clients from HIAS New York by editing resumes, holding mock interviews, and helping refugees learn about professional etiquette and cultural norms in the U.S.
