We need to make climate the centerpiece of the next election . And agriculture
needs to be part of the conversation.

Agriculture!
Dear Supporter,
Whoa! Did you hear that?!
A presidential candidate on the debate stage talked about soil as a solution to climate change! One extolled the environmental benefits of
cover crops and conservation easements! Another even name-checked two
regenerative organic farmers!
The climate emergency is our most urgent crisis. It deserves its own debate—that
debate must include a discussion of the power of regenerative
[[link removed]] agriculture to reverse global warming.

[[link removed]]The Sunrise Movement
[[link removed]] has been pressuring the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to hold a
#climatedebate. We agree! And we also think that just talking about fossil fuels
and emissions reduction isn’t enough—the debate organizers need to give the
regenerative agriculture solution equal time.
Fortunately, this election cycle, climate is getting more attention than it has
in past presidential elections. Even better, many candidates
[[link removed]] have caught on to the fact that fossil fuel reduction alone won’t be enough to
save us—we have to transform our food and farming system from one that
degenerates health and the environment, to one that regenerates it.
Here’s what candidate Tim Ryan said
[[link removed]] during the last debate:
“But you cannot get there on climate unless we talk about agriculture. We need
to convert our industrial agriculture system over to a sustainable and
regenerative agriculture system that actually sequesters carbon into the soil.
And you can go ask -- you can go ask Gabe Brown and Allen Williams, who actually
make money off of regenerative agriculture. So we can move away from all the
subsidies that we're giving the farmers. They haven't made a profit in five
years. And we could start getting good food into our schools and into our
communities. And that's going to drive health care down. That's another part of
the health care conversation that we didn't even have. How do we start talking
about health instead of just disease care?”
This topic deserves way more attention than it’s likely to get unless we have a
national debate focused solely climate change. That’s what the Sunrise Movement
has demanded
[[link removed]] . Initially, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) initially refused. But then,
both MSNBC and CNN announced they would broadcast candidate forums about climate
change. Now the news is that the DNC may vote on the issue on August 23.
Let’s support the Sunrise Movement’s demand for a climate debate and let the DNC
know we want one that includes agriculture!
