March to End Fossil
Fuels: Green Party members from all over the East Coast
participated in the massive March to End Fossil Fuels on Sunday,
September 17. Over 75,000 people joined the march, making it the
largest demonstration pressuring Biden since he took office and the
largest climate mobilization since the start of the pandemic. Green
Party banners spotted included GPNY, Nassau County, Bronx County,
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Maryland, and DC
Statehood.
Albany County Green Party held a summer get-together in late August
for its membership. The local is reorganizing and would like to invite
interested Greens to contact us or reach out to us on social media.
Green Party of Suffolk County held its annual membership meeting in
mid-September at Sachem Library. The featured guest speaker was Dr.
Sarah Meyland, presenting a deep dive Into Long Island’s aquifers. The
entire presentation is available for viewing on YouTube here:

New officers were also
elected.
Bronx County Greens have been very active this summer and fall, participating in
many events including two vigils for Leonard Peltier, a protest
against the excessive force and
death of Eric Duprey by police, and the September 17 March to End
Fossil Fuels.
Ballot Access Lawsuit Update: The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to
hear a challenge to New York's 2020 election reform laws that raised
the threshold for third political parties to appear on the ballot. The
court made the decision on Libertarian Party of New York v. New York
State Board of Elections, 22-893, at its September 26 conference. This
is the case over the ballot access laws passed in 2020 which tripled
the statewide independent petition signature requirement without
expanding the six week petitioning period, and also made it far more
difficult for a group to attain status as a qualified party based on
election results. The Supreme Court concluded that "New York’s
historic threshold increases are not severely burdensome because they
remain at or under 2% of the electorate and allow the continued
existence of two fusion parties, but disregarded critical facts
demonstrating the severe burdens imposed on minor parties that do not
nominate by fusion, including Petitioners," according to a court
brief. GPNY will continue to fight the unjust ballot access laws here
in New York.
Co-Chair Peter LaVenia was
interviewed by Mark Dunlea of Hudson Mohawk Magazine about the
lawsuit, which can be streamed here.
