[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Friends,

This afternoon, I was honored to participate in the swearing-in for California’s newest United States Senator, Laphonza Butler.

I’ve known — and worked with — Senator Butler for years, dating back to my time as California’s Secretary of State, and I’m glad to welcome her to the Senate as a colleague.

For those of you who don’t know her like I do, here’s a little bit of her background:

Before her appointment, she was President of EMILYs List, working to elect pro-choice Democratic women to public office at all levels.

And before that, she spent over a decade leading SEIU Local 2015, California’s largest labor union, which represents more than 300,000 home care workers across the state.

Laphonza also made some history today as the second Black woman to represent California in the U.S. Senate, and only the third Black woman in the history of the Senate. She’s also the first openly Black lesbian to serve in the U.S. Congress.

And like myself, she’s a working parent — one of only a handful in the Senate — so she understands first-hand the struggles working people and parents face.

Friend, will you join me in congratulating Senator Laphonza Butler on her appointment to the U.S. Senate today? Use this link to sign the card:

I know Laphonza will represent our great state well, and I’m looking forward to working closely with her to deliver for the people of California.

Thank you,

Alex Padilla
U.S. Senator for California
