#LowcountryFirst Pass In Review | September 29, 2023 Shutting Down Hello and Happy Friday! More spending fights in Washington this week, as the Speaker and factions of the Republican party try to come to an agreement to keep the government funded. Despite the impending shutdown, we have continued to work hard for the Lowcountry. For far too long, states haven’t taken action when it comes to testing rape kits – so much so that there is a backlog of some 100,000 untested rape kits around the country. This week we partnered with Rep. Barbara Lee (D, CA-12) to do something. Our bill would require states to conduct a comprehensive inventory of rape kits in their possession or risk their federal funding. Women must understand that their voices are going to be heard, actions are going to be taken, we're going to process these rape kits and get this backlog under control. Wednesday, our Oversight Subcommittee held a hearing on combating cyber attacks on American businesses. The White House, however, sent their talking points to the committee room to tie the impending shutdown to an unrelated hearing. And while we got a lot of great information from our witnesses, let’s talk about the truth about a shutdown. If the government does shut down, all federal employees will stop getting paid. What both sides like to hide, however, is that all these employees will get back pay. Furthermore, both sides like to blame the other for the spot we’re in. The Truth? It is Republicans AND Democrats who have spent this country into oblivion and are making no effort to fix it. Now, we’re stuck the night before the exam trying to cram through a process that usually takes months. We must return common sense spending and fiscal responsibility to Washington. Watch more here.
