John,

Mayor Breed announced a new initiative to require that anyone who has a substance use disorder and who wants to participate in our general assistance program to receive cash must be in treatment.

The epidemic of Fentanyl is like nothing we’ve seen before. More people are getting addicted and dying on our streets. If we want to see different results, we have to do something different. Simply put, if you want cash from this taxpayer-funded program, you need to participate in treatment. You have to try.

San Francisco is offering services and continues to enforce our laws to shut down open-air drug markets. But we have to do more. The failed policies of simply offering services and walking away when they are rejected again and again are not working.

Sadly, the critics, including mayoral candidate Daniel Lurie, progressives on the Board of Supervisors, another candidate for mayor, and the Coalition on Homelessness, are already saying that we shouldn’t try, that you can’t compel people to accept treatment.

We should do everything we can to get people into treatment and save lives.

Because this crisis is too severe not to try.

Here’s what people who understand the system know about what the City offers:We provide multiple opportunities to get into treatment, and many options to reach and help people who are trying to get help. We serve over 4,000 people with medication assisted treatment through medications like buprenorphine and methadone. Right now, people can sign up the same day they apply to one of these programs. The SF Department of Public Health serves 25,000 people annually with mental health and addiction issues through residential and outpatient services.

The critics are siding with the failed status quo and attacking Mayor Breed for proposing bold change. They fail to offer any solutions or ideas of their own, but would rather obstruct for their own political ends. Enough of the opposition and obstruction. Enough of the excuses.
