Hi John,

Funding for the federal government is currently set to expire at midnight on September 30th. If Congress fails to fulfill its obligation to pass a budget by that time, the federal government would be forced to shut down. During a shutdown, many government operations would cease until new funding is provided. For public servants who work for the federal government, including over 5,000 in Minnesota’s Third District, they will either be furloughed or continue to work without pay for the entire duration of the shutdown. Government shutdowns actually cost more money than they save. In fact, the last shutdown in 2019 cost the U.S. economy $11 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Not fixing the problem and allowing the government to shut down is undemocratic, unpatriotic, and a dereliction of duty. So, I want to hear from you, John:

I believe it’s time to inject fiscal responsibility into our national discourse, which is why I signed onto a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy urging him to put partisanship aside and find common ground to fund the federal government and deliver on behalf of the American people. I’m also working with my colleagues on the Problem Solvers Caucus to come up with a bipartisan compromise that could prevent a shutdown, which I believe should form the basis of a short-term agreement.

I’m disgusted that a small handful of House Republicans are using the threat of a government shutdown as a negotiation tactic – one that jeopardizes our security, safety, and economy.

The truth is, fiscal responsibility has been missing from Washington, D.C. for some time. This problem has no easy solution, and it is further complicated given that political incentives are misaligned. Most Americans aspire to leave our country in better shape than it is now and view Congress’s inability to keep our government operational as a very serious threat to our nation – and I agree. As a member of House Democratic Leadership and the Problem Solvers Caucus, I’m working tirelessly with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to prevent an unnecessary and inexcusable shutdown – and will do everything in my power to keep you updated about how a government shutdown impacts you.

Keep the faith and keep in touch,
