California Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed Assembly Bill 28 into law!

This is a huge victory, John! 🎉🎊🎈

California Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed Assembly Bill 28 into law! The Gun Violence Prevention, Healing, and Recovery Act — a transformative gun safety measure that will tax firearms to fund community violence prevention programs in the state — is a major step forward in the gun violence prevention movement.

That means gun manufacturers will finally be held accountable for flooding our communities with weapons of war, and gun violence victims can finally seek justice for the harm caused by these tragedies.

Additionally, the gun safety legislation makes historic investments, including:

  • 💰$75 million to fund cities and community-based organizations providing life-saving violence intervention and prevention services to the communities hardest hit by gun violence.
     
  • 🏫 $50 million to the Department of Education toward mental health, behavioral services, and school safety measures.
     
  • ⚖️$15 million to the Department of Justice to help advocacy programs bring justice for victims of gun violence — equitably improving investigations and clearance rates in firearm homicide and assault cases.

Last month, we joined gun safety advocates at the state capitol to lobby and speak out in favor of the bill. It’s your continued advocacy that made this win possible.
