We are excited to share highlights from the third quarter of 2023 with you, our valued readers. We hope you enjoy reading our quarterly update and please consider supporting our local, nonprofit, independent journalism.
We’re thrilled to announce the addition of four exceptional individuals to our Advisory Board. These members bring a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and unique skills that will greatly benefit City Limits as we continue to inform democracy and empower citizens to create a more just city. [link removed] We’re pleased to have Rashad Nelms ([link removed]) join our Advisory Board. He serves as Associate Vice President for Strategy and Innovation for Indiana University. Rashad has served in numerous leadership capacities with the United Nations World Food Programme. He has had an extensive career: from overseeing WFP operations that assisted communities living on the Zambian borders of Malawi and Angola, to mobilizing financial resources for WFP’s emergency flood response while serving in Islamabad, Pakistan, to representing WFP in global food security and agriculture discussions.
[link removed] We’re honored to welcome Michael Rezendes ([link removed]) to our Advisory Board. Mike is a senior investigative reporter with the global investigations team at The Associated Press. Previously, he worked for The Boston Globe Spotlight Team where he shared a Pulitzer Prize for revealing the cover-up of sex abuse in the Catholic Church. In 2015, he was played by Mark Ruffalo in the Academy Award-winning movie, Spotlight.
[link removed] Paul Spivey ([link removed]) brings a remarkable history of nonprofit recruitment and an impressive focus on civic sector foundations. With his background as a former President of the Edwin Gould Foundation, his commitment to bridging educational gaps and providing support services for at-risk youth aligns perfectly with our values.
[link removed] We’re excited to have Tanzina Vega ([link removed]) on board, a skilled journalist with a strong passion for education, addressing inequality, and community engagement. Her contributions as an instructor with our CLARIFY ([link removed]) team and her experience as a journalist at The New York Times, CNN, and as the former host OF WNYC’s Takeaway, showcase her commitment to sharing important stories. She is an adjunct professor at NYU and a contributing columnist for the Boston Globe opinion section.
We look forward to the positive impact that Rashad, Michael, Paul, and Tanzina will bring to City Limits. Their dedication to our mission and unique backgrounds will contribute to our continued success.
We’re grateful to have received support for a civic discourse project from the American Press Institute (API) ([link removed]) . This funding and peer learning opportunity will help us to enhance community engagement while prioritizing diversity and inclusivity in our work. With this funding, we’ll engage and inform the NYCHA community ahead of a significant vote in NYCHA’s Nostrand Houses to decide between traditional public housing or alternative models. We aim to empower NYCHA residents with the knowledge and agency to shape the future of their housing community.
We're actively seeking more funding for our bilingual news project, Una Ciudad sin Límites ([link removed]) , to expand our coverage to focus on the pressing housing and homelessness issues amidst the asylum seekers crisis.

Data at the Limits: Data-driven reporting and visualizations on NYC’s most pressing policy issues. We seek to hire freelancers adept at Excel, coding, and building interactives to help us turn our data reporting into compelling visualizations. [link removed] We’re excited to share that our NYCHA reporter, Tatyana Turner ([link removed]) , has been chosen for the prestigious 2023 Age Boom Academy Fellowship at Columbia University ([link removed]) . This program, focused on aging issues, will enhance Tatyana's reporting and deepen her understanding of how housing impacts health as we age. Congrats to Tatyana on this achievement! Her continued growth and contributions will undoubtedly flourish through the Age Boom Academy.
[link removed] Housing Reporter Emma Whitford Promoted to Deputy Editor ([link removed])

Emma Whitford ([link removed]) , who joined City Limits as Senior Housing Reporter in February, will continue to report for City Limits core housing beat and will serve as editor for our series on NYCHA, launched earlier this year to provide in-depth coverage of the nation’s largest public housing system.

Last month, more than 50 NYC high school and college students returned to campus with a greater appreciation for journalism, new skills in research and reporting, a deeper understanding of what is news and what is not–and more confidence in their ability to ask public figures the hard questions. These students participated in a robust summer of journalism training with CLARIFY News ([link removed]) . Read their published stories here ([link removed]) .
ANNOUNCING THE CLARIFY NEWS FELLOWSHIP
We’re thrilled to introduce the CLARIFY News Fellowship, a natural extension of our commitment to fostering excellence in journalism. This ambitious program matches individual support with talented high school students to provide them with skills and experience that support their successful entry into higher education or the workforce. Each $1,000 donation to the fund supports one student’s participation in the CLARIFY News student reporter internship.
