Earlier this month, Mexico decriminalized abortion nationwide. Consequently, as it has been a little over a year since the United States overturned Roe v. Wade, Mexico has seen an uptick in the number of American women seeking abortions in the country. From the NYT: “The truth is that years ago, we neither had nor envisioned collaboration with the United States,” said Verónica Cruz, who 20 years ago helped found the reproductive-rights organization Las Libres, which means “the free ones.” She added: “But faced with the urgency, the increasing restrictions, and having a model, resources like the pills, and as our territory progresses, it became evident that we needed to build international solidarity.” While Mexico still has states with restrictions and bans, activists feel the country is moving in a positive direction. In juxtaposition is the U.S., which seemingly continues moving towards more restrictions daily. This influx of patients may increase drastically if the Supreme Court rules in favor of conservative lower courts to restrict access to mifepristone or to retract the FDA’s approval of the drug altogether. More from NYT: “Since the lifting of Roe, Ms. Cruz said she has helped roughly 20,000 women in 23 states secure the abortion pills.” |
