Representative Adriano Espaillat Leads Congressional Letter Urging Continued Immigration Engagement from Biden-Harris Administration

Letter Touts Congressional Success during Hispanic Heritage Month and in Support of Asylum Seekers to the U.S.

NEW YORK, NY – Last week, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) led a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris urging the administration to address and facilitate swift action towards expediting work authorizations for migrants and to use their full executive power to provide relief for asylum seekers in the United States.

“We applaud cities welcoming asylum seekers with dignity and respect, and we acknowledge that the life sustaining and legal services they provide to ensure migrants can achieve self-sufficiency are unsustainable without additional federal relief. As such, we respectfully request that your administration take the following actions to alleviate financial strains on cities that are providing quality care for migrants,” Members said in the letter.

Rep. Espaillat and 14 other Members of Congress suggest initiatives to aid cities and states such as redesignating Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status (TPS)—which successfully occurred a few days after the letter was sent—in addition to granting swift work authorization for humanitarian parole recipients, foregoing the current regulatory waiting period that asylum seekers must undergo before applying for work permits, and cultivating an interagency response to help migrants obtain permanent housing. Overall, these methods seek to offer protection and legal working status to asylum seekers, which will allow them to achieve much desired self-sufficiency and build their own American dream.

NEW YORK, NY – La semana pasada, el congresista Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) encabezó una carta al presidente Joe Biden y a la vicepresidenta Kamala Harris instando a la Administración a abordar y facilitar acciones rápidas para agilizar las autorizaciones de trabajo para los migrantes y a utilizar todo su poder ejecutivo para brindar ayuda a los solicitantes de asilo en Estados Unidos.

“Aplaudimos a las ciudades que dan la bienvenida a los solicitantes de asilo con dignidad y respeto, y reconocemos que los servicios legales y de soporte vital que brindan para garantizar que los migrantes puedan lograr la autosuficiencia son insostenibles sin ayuda federal adicional. Como tal, solicitamos respetuosamente que su administración tome las siguientes acciones para aliviar las tensiones financieras en las ciudades que brindan atención de calidad a los migrantes”, escribieron los miembros del Congreso en la carta.

Rep. Espaillat y otros 14 miembros del Congreso sugieren iniciativas para ayudar a ciudades y estados, como reasignar a Venezuela el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) ―lo que ocurrió exitosamente unos días después de que se envió la carta―, además de otorgar permisos de trabajo de manera rápida para los beneficiarios de permisos humanitarios, renunciando al actual período de espera regulatorio que los solicitantes de asilo deben pasar antes de solicitar permisos de trabajo, y cultivando una respuesta interinstitucional para ayudar a los migrantes a obtener una vivienda permanente. En general, estos métodos buscan ofrecer protección y estatus laboral legal a los solicitantes de asilo, lo que les permitirá alcanzar la tan deseada autosuficiencia y construir su propio Sueño Americano.
