John, in the United States Senate, we have now proved something pretty phenomenal, and at the same time pretty obscene.

I want to explain to you in detail exactly what is happening with child poverty in this country. While this email is a bit longer than most that we send, I hope you will read it through to the end.

John, what we’ve proved is that poverty for children in America is not some accident. It’s a policy choice — which is exactly what I told Chris Hayes on MSNBC:

The latest Census Bureau data revealed this week that child poverty jumped from 5.2% in 2021 to 12.4% last year — after Democrats’ expanded Child Tax Credit cut it by nearly 50 percent, before unanimous GOP opposition allowed it to expire.

John, this moral obscenity of the richest nation in the world having the highest poverty rates is not an accident.

It’s not destiny.

It’s not an inevitability.

It’s people in the United States Senate making a policy choice. Which is why this data did not come as a surprise to me.

The expanded Child Tax Credit was the biggest middle-class tax cut in our lifetimes. This gave 85 to 90 percent of families in New Jersey their tax dollars back.

This lifted millions of American children out of poverty and helped millions of families make their kitchen table economics work.

My GOP colleagues obsess over carried interest for the wealthiest folks, tax loopholes and tax breaks, but when it comes to something that is in the national interest, something that will keep kids out of poverty — not to mention also benefiting millions of middle class and working Americans — they go against their own rhetoric of giving people more of their tax dollars back.

There was no justification whatsoever for letting the expanded Child Tax Credit expire. Child poverty was at an all-time low. We cut it by half. Now it’s gone up.

The data is clear. For every dollar we spend to lift kids out of poverty, we save five dollars for our economy.

Poverty affects children’s brain development. The cortisol pumping from stress and anxiety about unstable living conditions and not having food to eat — that affects how the child’s brain develops, and it lasts a lifetime.

I have been working on this issue for years now. We have faced unanimous GOP opposition. But there is light on the horizon.

Last year, you helped expand our Democratic Senate majority by one vote in Pennsylvania.

That victory expanded our majority from Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote in a 50-50 majority to a 51-49 margin.

That means that a single member of the Senate can no longer hold up or block this legislation when it’s time to bring it up for a vote.

But with Speaker Kevin McCarthy and a GOP majority in the House, our path forward to restore the expanded Child Tax Credit runs through both chambers of Congress before it can reach President Biden.

That is why I’ll be doing everything I can in these next 14 months to win this election. And I hope you’ll add your support with a donation of $10 or whatever you can spare. [[link removed]]

In the meantime, our team is going to prioritize children.

For the brief time that the expanded Child Tax Credit was in place, tens of millions of families with children were able to pay for basic necessities like rent, utilities, and food.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said that child poverty is moral violence. I agree. And I have faith in our nation.

More people need to know about the expanded Child Tax Credit and demand we do it again. That is the message our campaign will seek to share in the coming weeks and months.

I hope you’ll join me. Chip in $10 or any amount that works for you. Let’s win this election and reinstate this legislation to eradicate child poverty once and for all. [[link removed]]

Thanks so much for your support.

With love and gratitude,
