Hi friends,

September marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time when we come together as a community to raise awareness, offer support, and shed light on a critical issue that affects far too many lives.

As a mom of two young girls, I know how important it is to support our kids’ mental health. I believe that families and communities can always do more to support the mental health challenges of our time, which is why I was so proud to secure the passage of the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Reauthorization Act last year, bipartisan legislation to renew critical youth mental health and suicide prevention programs.

I believe that we must invest in proven programs that help young people, save lives, and end the stigma associated with getting help – and I’m heartened to have worked across the aisle to make this happen.

Schools are also key resources for ending the stigma. That’s why earlier this year I introduced the Mentoring to Succeed Act, legislation that would bring much needed, research-backed support to students across our country facing educational barriers due to poverty, inadequate schooling, disability, adverse childhood experiences, drug or alcohol abuse, and more.

Additionally, last year I also introduced the Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Act to support positive mental health promotion and suicide prevention programs in high schools. From a young age, it should be normal to have conversations around mental health that are free of shame or judgment, and far too many families in our district and around the country have been impacted by a lack of accessible resources that could have prevented suicide. I will always work to invest in education, treatment, and strengthened mental health services.

Friends, I know that addressing the mental health needs of our community requires a comprehensive approach. We all deserve to live happy, fulfilling lives and to have places to turn to if we're struggling. I’m devoted to continuing this work in Congress – and you can help me by chipping in and keeping my voice at the table. [[link removed]]
