We are 10 days away from the federal government shutting down. Rather than working with House Democrats to keep the government open, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is pandering to the most extreme, dangerous fringe of the GOP base.

MAGA Republicans in the House are moving forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, but they can’t find the votes to keep the federal government functioning. Their price to vote to keep government offices open is an 8% across the board cut to education, nutrition, housing, law enforcement, transportation, food inspection, and environmental protection that will hurt families, communities, businesses, and our economy.

While the MAGA Republicans are defending the January 6th insurrectionists, they can’t even find the votes to pass a defense appropriations bill to fund the brave men and women in the Armed Forces who are protecting our nation – something I did twice last Congress as chair of defense appropriations.

Team, the House GOP is irresponsible and is more interested in sowing chaos than governing this great country. The American people deserve better. But instead, families, businesses, and every American is about to get a government shutdown that will put our economy at risk. But Republicans don’t care.

As a senior Democratic appropriator, I’m leading the fight to avoid a harmful shutdown but also to take back the U.S. House in 2024, restoring Democratic control and responsible leadership.
