SPECIAL EDITION: IMPEACHMENT

Many of you watched some or all of the impeachment trial in the Senate or followed it in the news. This is my recap of what happened in the House when they rushed through the impeachment during the last few days of session with little notice to members and the trial itself. At the end of the trial, I made brief remarks before I adjourned. The last impeachment of a statewide elected official was almost 100 years ago. We studied the records from that trial to help prepare for this trial and to help guide us in writing our rules. Decades from now, another legislature faced with an impeachment will look back at what happened in 2023. They won't look at TV or radio interviews or read news stories. They will read the court record. I wanted to ensure the court record reflected the history of what happened in the House and the Senate. Here are my brief remarks [[link removed]].

Much of what I said in my remarks came from a courageous speech in the House from Rep. John Smithee, an experienced attorney. This is an important speech to listen to so you can genuinely understand the flawed and broken House process that 67 Republicans supported. Here is the courageous speech [[link removed]] from Rep. Smithee, who tried to stop it.

Rep. Travis Clardy, also an attorney, echoed those of Rep. Smithee. You can listen to his remarks here [[link removed]].
