Dear  john,

Autumn is in the air and football season is in full swing. My Tar Heels just moved to 3-0, and the other North Carolina teams are looking good, too. I hope that you and your family are enjoying the start of the season.

This past week, lawmakers returned to Washington after spending August in our districts. At the end of this month, government funding will run out. Entrenched swamp interests are in favor of passing a Continuing Resolution (CR) that will do nothing but continue the same bloated spending that I am fighting against tooth and nail.

This week, my House Freedom Caucus colleagues and I made it perfectly clear what it will take for us to get onboard with any government funding plan, and that we won’t simply go along with the broken status quo that so many Americans are frustrated with.

Government Funding

Each year, Congress is supposed to pass twelve separate appropriations bills to fund various parts of the government. This allows each agency’s funding to be considered carefully, based on the merits

But it’s been decades since Congress last passed and had the twelve individual bills signed into law. Nowadays, leadership in both chambers will instead lump all 12 of the spending bills together in an omnibus package at the end of year, which is a key factor in our ever-increasing federal spending.

THROWBACK: The 2022 Monsterbus

In January, when my colleagues and I refused to vote for Kevin McCarthy to become Speaker of the House without serious changes to the way the Capitol operates, restoring the normal appropriations process and cutting down spending was a key condition. The Speaker has reneged on that part of the deal – and he will face the consequences if we do not get back to regular order

Freedom Caucus members held a press conference this week on the problem our nation faces, and what we’re going to do about it. Watch my remarks here:

I also spoke with Charlie Kirk about the fight ahead:

We have the power of the purse in the House – it’s time to use it to this stop the woke and weaponized government. I’m tired of watching my fellow members of Congress bellyache about high spending while signing off on the latest increases. Enough is enough.

The Open Borders Problem

We have an illegal immigration crisis. The solution is simple – close the border, stop rewarding illegal immigrants, and empower border patrol agents to do their jobs. President Biden could do these things chooses not to do anything

It’s a crisis that threatens our nation’s order, resources, and our very humanity. Child traffickers, drug cartels, and criminals of every stripe have free reign of the border.

This is what our government is funding. This is why it’s critical for Congress to stand firm against it.

Ukraine War Update

A few months ago, Senator JD Vance and I wrote to the White House Office of Management and Budget demanding a full crosscutting report of all resources and funds we’ve sent to Ukraine and how it’s been spent. This week, months past the deadline, we finally received that report

The numbers are jarring – over $100 billion spent on this war of choice so far, and the Biden administration and Congressional war hawks want to send billions more overseas.

I’ll continue to fight against increased spending on the war, and while I’m pleased to see more of my colleagues joining me in that stance, there is much work to be done.

Intern Applications

We are now accepting applications for spring 2024 internships in our D.C. and NC offices.  All interested applicants should email their resumes to[email protected].
