Hi John,

After the washout that was August, a sunny, and surf-filled, start to September was just what the doctor ordered. But whatever the weather, the sewage news keeps on coming...

The BBC backed up our [[link removed]]findings on potentially illegal dry spills with their research: ' Water firms illegally spilled sewage on dry days - data suggests [[link removed]].' We think it's clear that water companies are contravening their permits, and the Office for Environmental Protection agree [[link removed]] - this week they announced that they suspect the government and water regulators have broken the law over how they regulate sewage releases.

The government previously promised not to weaken environmental protections, but as we've seen, they are more than willing to throw water quality under the bus [[link removed]] by planning to scarp 'nutrient neutrality' rules. These rules aim to prevent pollution.

On that note, we've launched our #EndSewagePollution Manifesto in partnership with a number of other water-focused organisations. There is strength in numbers. Read more below.

We're working on our legacy [[link removed]] programme to make sure we're prepared to keep up the fight for years to come, and we'll soon be kicking off with Dip a Day in October.

We need your support to keep up the pressure, will you help fund our work from as from as little as Β£1 each week? [[link removed]]

Leaving a legacy for the ocean 🌊

We're so grateful to those of you who have left us a gift in your will. Legacy pledges [[link removed]] are at the core of driving our mission. In 2021, our supporters pledged Β£1 million in legacy pledges to fund our long-term campaigns.

A study by the Charities Aid Foundation found that legacy gifts make up an average of 12% of the income for environmental charities in the UK – and brought in Β£3.7 billion to the sector in 2023. That’s a HUGE chunk of change. We couldn't think of a better legacy than helping to protect the ocean for future generations. Want to be a part of our legacy [[link removed]]?

Next steps for our End Sewage Pollution campaign...

🚨 MANIFESTO LAUNCH 🚨 We've launched our #EndSewagePollution Manifesto in partnership with a strong community of water-focused organisations. It's a short and sweet call to action listing the polices we want all political parties to adopt ahead of the next election. Our calls are clear. Let’s turn the tide on sewage at the next general election

Read the manifesto here [[link removed]] and make sure your local MP sees it.

Annie [[link removed]] took part last year, donning fancy dress and raising Β£1,340 for the ocean.

"I go in the sea every day anyway, when I saw the invitation to join the Dip a Day campaign, I thought, β€˜Why not do it to help this issue?’ Little did I know my silly videos [[link removed]] would end up being so popular."

On cold water dips, Ken says, "leaning into temporary discomfort builds resilience and strength."

Read more [[link removed]] about Ken's journey, joining a men's swimming group, and how dipping has helped him to thrive.
