Ā

Who is Sister District DC/VA/MD?

We are volunteers who agree thatĀ elections for state legislatures are where the real change is made, and understand theĀ impact small efforts and donations can makeĀ in these critical elections.

Our Steering Committee coordinates our efforts across the DC/VA/MD area. One of our key Committee members is our Fundraising Co-Chair, Jim Banner.

About Jim

Ā

Originally from New York, Jim now resides in Washington DC, and is a historian of the United States, particularly of the period between the Revolution and Civil War. A member of the Princeton faculty and visiting professor elsewhere, he has taught soldiers, high-schoolers, collegians, graduate students, and, most recently, post-collegians.Ā Ā  His two most recent books are Presidential Misconduct: from George Washington to Today (2019), of which he was editor, and The Ever-Changing Past: Why All History is Revisionist History (2021).Ā  Heā€™s currently writing a book about historians: who they are, what they do, and why they do it.Ā

Ā

Jim was founding chairman of the New Jersey chapter of Common Cause, served for six years as a member of the national governing board of Common Cause during theĀ

Watergate crisis, and as a historian, was a special consultant to the Impeachment Inquiry of the House Committee on the Judiciary in 1974.Ā  He was also lead plaintiff in a challenge to the provision of federal law that prohibits the District of Columbia from taxing the income of non-residents, a prohibition unique in the world.Ā  The suit lost at both trial and appeals levels.Ā  One member of the three-judge appeals bench was John Roberts.

Ā

Jim is married to Phyllis Kramer and has two children and two grandchildren. He gets relief from spending all his free time tearing his hair out about the state of the world and nation by focusing on the concrete challenge of electing Democrats to state legislatures, something the Democratic Party has forgotten about for over a third of a century.

Ā

Before You Go...

Sister Districtā€™s mission is to imagine, build, and expand progressive power in state legislatures, and we know that organizing around elections is just one piece of the puzzle.

Thatā€™s why weā€™re amplifying the voices of local lawmakers, educating the public about the importance of state leaders and policies, and inspiring people to deepen their civic engagement ā€” especially locally and down-ballot.

There is power in storytelling, and the more people we bring into this fight, the more powerful our movement will become. We hope you will join us in our efforts!
