John,
Do you remember where you were on Sept. 11, 2001?

I was dropping my children off to school and heading into my office in downtown Seattle when the news of the first plane hitting the first tower was breaking. As the magnitude of the day became evident, I felt the weight of pending war. As a former military spouse and government employee stationed abroad, I knew there were friends and former colleagues that were rising up to meet the enemy that came to our shores. It was a strong reminder that Freedom isn’t free and standing for democracy has a high price.

Twenty-two years ago the tragedy planes crashing at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania shook us to our core.

The events tested our ability to unite in the spirit of giving aid to our fellow countrymen, grieve the loss of 2,977 lives and take stock of what had been enacted upon our nation.

We will never forget those who were lost that day. In honoring their memory today, we also give our respects to all the first responders, law enforcement and good samaritans who stepped up to demonstrate goodwill in the face of the terrorist monstrosity that came against us as a nation.

As we face the challenges of the day, it’s our human nature to feel overwhelmed with despair over the destruction we see happening around us.

On this Patriot Day, our memory of a mourning nation dealing with the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001 fortifies our resolve to work together in a spirit of goodwill for the virtues that unite us.
