John—
In just six days, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in June Medical Services LLC v. Russo — the first major Supreme Court case to threaten the protections of Roe v. Wade since Brett Kavanaugh joined the Court.
Because this is such an incredibly perilous time, I wanted to take a moment to explain to you, one of our most dedicated supporters, what we’re expecting — and how we're preparing for what’s coming next.
We need a response ready — and that’s only possible with your generous support. If you don't need any more convincing — if you were just waiting for the right opportunity to help power the movement for reproductive freedom — now's the time! Chip in $15 today.
I want you to know that anyone who says they know for sure what the Supreme Court will do is wrong. That means we need to be ready for many different possibilities when the justices issue their ruling.
Obviously, the worst-case scenario is for the five anti-choice justices to clearly gut the protections of Roe v. Wade. But there’s another, perhaps even more devious possibility: rolling back the ability to challenge unjust laws that take away reproductive freedom while pretending to leave Roe in place.
If that happens, we could face an even more difficult battle to save the right to access abortion.
We’ll likely see headlines saying (wrongly) that the Court upheld Roe's protections. Senators who voted for Brett Kavanaugh, like Susan Collins, will claim to be vindicated.
Worst of all, we could see a decline in grassroots energy at the worst possible time, as the 7 in 10 Americans who support Roe see those misleading headlines and are left with an incredibly dangerous and false sense of security.
It would be the worst of both worlds: Anti-choice politicians would be handed a clear path to eradicate access to abortion in their states, while voters are made to believe that everything is fine just as the 2020 election reaches a critical juncture.
See why we’re so worried? This Supreme Court case is a nightmare, and we need to be ready for anything. We’re aiming to raise $100,000 by March 4th to prepare our response. Will you donate $15 today?
You might be wondering: How could they gut Roe v. Wade without officially overturning it?
Well, here’s one possibility: They could pretend to leave Roe v. Wade in place, but take away abortion providers’ ability to serve as plaintiffs and fight for their patients in court when state governments try to shut clinics down.
Then, anti-choice politicians could pass extreme clinic shutdown laws that force nearly every abortion provider from Texas to South Carolina to close, knowing that courthouse doors would be locked to any abortion provider trying to fight for their patients’ rights in court.
We need to be ready for anything. There are multiple possible scenarios that could roll back our rights and hurt women and families. Here’s what we need to have ready just six days from today:
- On March 4th, the day of oral arguments, the whole world will be watching the Supreme Court. We need a huge turnout of NARAL members rallying for the right to access abortion to show that we are the true majority — and we'll never stop fighting for reproductive freedom for every body.
- Our team of organizers in key battleground states need to be prepared to mobilize volunteers to call and text voters, go door-to-door — whatever it takes to take back the White House and end Mitch McConnell's control of the Senate.
- We need the resources to run ads targeting the 7 in 10 Americans who support Roe, educating them on the real outcomes of this case in order to counter the disinformation we know anti-choice extremists will perpetuate.

Let’s be honest: Abortion rights are already massively restricted in many states. Right now, there’s just one abortion clinic in states like Missouri and Mississippi. Dozens of states have mandatory waiting periods, bans on insurance coverage for abortion, invasive and humiliating forced ultrasound requirements... the list goes on and on.1
If Roe v. Wade is weakened even a bit, abortion could be pushed out of reach for hundreds of thousands more people across the country.
Will you make a donation to help fund our emergency campaign to defend reproductive freedom?
Women and families need the freedom to make the best decisions for their circumstances. But right now, they’re being punished as anti-choice politicians look to score political points. Please, John, join us to make sure we can fight back and ensure that people can make their own decisions about pregnancy, without politicians interfering.
Thank you for all you do for reproductive freedom,
Ilyse Hogue President, NARAL Pro-Choice America
With the support of people like you, we can make sure that freedom is for every body.
