Westfest

This past Saturday, I attended Westfest, an annual festival in West to celebrate the city's Czech heritage. I enjoyed participating in the parade on Main Street, along with community members. Visitors came in from across Central Texas, adding to the sense of unity and shared heritage.

ImageThe parade was one of many activities. I also witnessed polka dances and kolache-eating contests. These traditions have been part of the community for generations, linking the City of West to its cultural roots. The marketplace at the center of Westfest and both the history and entrepreneurial spirit of West was on full display. Vendors offered various products to showcase the community's ingenuity and distinct culture.

I am proud of the thriving businesses and cultural traditions in West and I am committed to working with community leaders to continue to promote the success and growth of this town.

GWAMA Luncheon

On Thursday, I spoke at a luncheon with Waco business leaders to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Greater Waco Advanced Manufacturing Academy (GWAMA). Creating workforce education and opportunities in trade industries for high school students is a priority of mine in Congress.

ImageGWAMA is a public magnet school that offers students in grades 10 through 12 from across McLennan County an opportunity to enroll in specialized trade programs. Students can choose from four specialized tracks: architecture, robotics, welding, or construction science. Throughout the program, they gain valuable certifications in sheet metal work, carpentry, robotics, architectural design software, and more. Young individuals who attend GWAMA are achieving remarkable accomplishments for their age.

The luncheon showcased welded metal sculptures on each table, a testament to the incredible skill of GWAMA students. It is uplifting to celebrate the ongoing successes of GWAMA, knowing that new business partnerships will soon provide even better access to resources and certifications for students and success for the academy. These partnerships and internship opportunities will continue to give students practical experience in their chosen trades.

Texas requires a strong skilled labor workforce support the state's economic growth. My aim is to inspire young people within the 17th Congressional District to explore these growing opportunities within trade and industry. The dedicated educators at GWAMA have a record of success in preparing students for successful internships and future high-skill employment. GWAMA is a bright beacon of hope and a pillar of stability for the Central Texas region.

Baylor Cyber Range Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On Thursday, I also spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Central Texas Cyber Range (CTCR), a new state-of-the-art cybersecurity research and training facility. This milestone is the result of a collaboration between Baylor University and McLennan Community College (MCC).

ImageI'm especially proud to highlight that my efforts in Congress directly contributed to securing $1.5 million in federal funding for this important project. These funds and additional contributions have transformed the CTCR from an idea into a fully operational center for cybersecurity excellence.

This venture is more than a one-time investment; it's a sustainable initiative that will offer educational pathways in the cybersecurity field, benefiting our district and the nation. Through this endeavor, we are not just responding to immediate needs but are preparing for a more secure future. I am excited to support projects, like the Central Texas Cyber Range, to establish Baylor University, McLennan Community College, and McLennan County as national leaders in cybersecurity.”
