Last month, Tennessee lawmakers held a special session intended to improve public safety after a deadly school shooting earlier this year. Here’s what happened:

• Republicans refused to pass the gun safety measures their constituents have been begging them to enact for months.
• Republicans used their supermajority to once again silence Rep. Justin Jones of the TN Three – prohibiting him from speaking and debating on bills for a day of the session.
• The rule used to silence Rep. Jones was adopted by the GOP-led chamber only a week prior – and gives Republicans the power to silence members of the House.

Republicans are more focused on silencing those who call out their inaction than they are serving the people of their state. It’s shameful.

Democrats like Reps. Jones and Pearson are working to hold the GOP accountable and stand up to the gun lobby, but they can’t win this fight alone. To pass the meaningful gun safety measures that will make our communities safer, we must build Democratic power in states like Tennessee.
