My grandmother, Lucile

John,

Today I’m with my grandmother Lucile, celebrating her 106th birthday!

A lot has changed in the last 106 years. My grandmother has lived to witness some of the most pivotal moments in American history, the accomplishments of three generations of activist movements, and massive societal change.

Image of David’s Grandmother smiling contentedly while seated at her piano wearing a white long-sleeve shirt with black flowers and a black shirt underneath.

But in recent years, my grandmother has watched so many of our fundamental rights get stripped away, one bill or Supreme Court decision at a time.

Back in 1917, women did not have the right to divorce, to take out a loan or even have a bank account in their own name. And they certainly did not have the right to seek an abortion.

Lucile was born into a country where women did not even have the right to vote. But last year, she proudly cast her vote for me twice, first in the Democratic primary and again in the general, to make me the only openly gay Senate candidate on the ballot.

And she will vote for me again in 2024 for the U.S. House.

Will you help me celebrate her extraordinary life with a contribution to our campaign to flip ID-02 today?

I often think about the incredible changes my grandmother has witnessed over the span of her lifetime.

In fact, when my grandmother was born, a gay man like me wasn’t free to live openly or become a father to two amazing adopted boys. And we only won the right to marriage equality eight years ago.

A photo of David Roth with his two sons seated at a restaurant table with empty plates in front of them, smiling contentedly as they just finished sharing a meal.

Last year, the Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade and erased the constitutionally protected right to seek an abortion, a right my grandmother did not have when she was born.

As more of the Republicans’ extremist agenda unfolds before our eyes, we’ve both wondered what my family will lose next: voting rights, access to contraception, marriage equality?

My grandmother has even considered the possibility that I might lose my right to be a parent, and she might lose her great-grandchildren.

These are very real threats posed by Republicans in Congress, like my opponent Mike Simpson. GOP extremism could affect Idaho families like mine for generations to come.

That’s why we have to fight for every single seat we can – and John, we CAN win here in Idaho’s 2nd.

I’m running to flip this House seat because I don’t want my grandmother to watch all the rights her generation fought for get washed out by a radical Republican agenda.

My grandma has taught me so much in life, not the least of which is to leave the world better than you found it. The progress her generation helped fight for is under attack, and I won’t stand for it.

Help me celebrate 106 years of Lucile’s life by joining me in the fight to save our democracy.

For my family and yours,

David Roth

David Roth is a single, gay dad running for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. We’re going up against a GOP incumbent who has been in this seat for almost 25 years. It’s time for change in Idaho, and our grassroots campaign is building on the momentum that began in David’s race for U.S. Senate last cycle. The GOP is not planning to defend this seat, so we plan to take it from them and help Democrats retake the House majority next year. We’d love your support to build a solid campaign to bring progress to Idaho and the country.
