This is devastating, John.
Last Monday, an armed student walked into a classroom lab and fatally shot Dr. Zijie Yan, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
While the campus was on lockdown for three hours, students hid in the bathrooms, climbed out of building windows, and texted their loved ones what they believed would be their last messages.
This should NOT be normal. As students and teachers return to the classroom, they should NOT have to worry about dying at school. But this is our reality.
Just days ago, the UNC March For Our Lives chapter organized a rally to demand action. One of our chapter members gave a speech sharing that this was the third mass shooting she had survived. They’re a week into classes and are already marching and mourning. And now, they and hundreds of other young people in North Carolina are planning to bring hell to Raleigh.
Earlier this year, politicians in North Carolina bowed to the gun lobby and loosened gun laws. That’s why we are working with the UNC community to organize more gun safety actions like these and hold their state leaders accountable for failing to protect us.
We need to demand change, NOW. Wherever you are, take action with us and help build a world free of gun violence.
Thanks for joining us in the fight to save lives.
In solidarity,
March For Our Lives
