Protecting Our Youth

Each year, 28,000 Texans are killed due to tobacco abuse, emphasizing the importance of The Coalition, an organization in Angelina County dedicated to keeping our youth drug and tobacco-free. While meeting with them on Wednesday, I spoke to an impressive group of middle and high school students who have learned leadership skills, tobacco risks, and benefits of a tobacco-free lifestyle. Since 1988, members of The Coalition have devoted themselves to educating school children about substance abuse issues in Angelina County school districts. They currently have over 1,500 students across the State of Texas committed to stopping tobacco and illegal substance use among their peers.

ImageWhile curbing drug usage among young individuals is an ongoing effort, I’m proud to speak to an organization that regularly reduces underage drinking and marijuana usage. After successfully advocating for the passage of the Smoke-Free Lufkin ordinance in 2013, The Coalition remains a fixture of sincerity and effectiveness in the Lufkin community.  The Coalition offers support and resources to prevent students from misinformation about the potential risks of tobacco and other substances. I hope this organization continues to inspire young people to fight against this issue in America.

I am proud to be the foremost anti-marijuana Member of Congress, as there is a significant correlation between marijuana and hard drug use. The ongoing fentanyl crisis in America has prompted me to respond by cosponsoring H.R. 4701, the Protecting Americans from Fentanyl Trafficking Act of 2023. I'm proud to support this bill which will change the status of fentanyl to schedule 1 under the Controlled Substances Act, which will designate the drug as not medically accepted and having a high potential for abuse. Doing so will make it harder for drug traffickers to prey on Americans.

Eggs & Issues Breakfast

On Thursday, I had the honor of providing a legislative update at the "Eggs & Issues" breakfast hosted by the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce. The event was a valuable opportunity to engage with community leaders, local business owners, and concerned citizens. We discussed the latest developments in Congress and how they impact East Texas. I am deeply grateful for the thoughtful dialogue and the chance to listen to the concerns of the constituents I am privileged to represent.

ImageOne of the issues at the forefront of East Texas is broadband access. Some residents in rural areas like Nacogdoches are without access. Better broadband gives individuals greater tele-opportunities for their health needs, e-commerce, and responsive emergency phone calls. I'm committed to providing broadband access to attract moving families inclined to settle in the best communities Texas offers.

Likewise, border control is a top issue for many residents of East Texas. President Biden has failed to secure our southern border and keep communities safe from the front lines of the drug cartel industry. Local officials are not equipped to handle migrant children’s healthcare needs and bilingual education. Fundamentally, this is a federal crisis that is allowed to happen by the Biden Administration. Members of the Texas delegation in Congress, including myself, are working relentlessly to hold President Biden and the Democrats accountable for their refusal to act.

State of the Nation Luncheon

This Friday, I returned home to Waco to serve as a keynote speaker, alongside Senator Cruz (TX), at the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce's "State of the Nation Luncheon." During the event, we discussed legislative issues affecting both Waco and Central Texas.

ImageAmong them is a shortage of construction workers, which makes up six percent of Waco’s workforce. The City of Waco will benefit from increasing the number of skilled workers, allowing for economic growth and prosperity across McLennan County. I am committed to working with the chamber to bolster our city’s workforce pipeline to satisfy our current job surplus.

I also gave an update on infrastructure projects in Waco that I secured federal funding for in the Fiscal Year 2023 Appropriations Act. These infrastructure projects totaling $5 million are solving needed public safety, water, and transportation issues arising as McLennan County continues to grow. The expansion of the Speegleville Road Bridge is a top concern due to its proximity to schools. The Lake Waco Embankment Study will provide a long-term solution to keep Lakeshore Drive maintained. Bull Hide Regional Proclamation Plant will conserve high-quality water for the people of Waco while reducing stress on our local environment.
