THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
LEGISLATIVE SESSION ONE OF MISSED OPPORTUNITIES AND RUNAWAY SPENDING

The recent 30-day Legislative Session has been a tax and spend smorgasbord and an arrogant display of behavior by progressive Democrats. Republican leadership has described the Session as one of "missed opportunities" and one that has failed to help average New Mexicans. The passage of the Red Flag bill attacked our 2nd Amendment rights; left-leaning Democrats raised our taxes once more; the progressives again increased spending--this time by more than half a billion dollars--and gave special interest groups what they wanted, ignoring your needs. The bottom line is the progressives at the Roundhouse don't understand how to control spending and refuse to acknowledge that vital oil and gas revenues won't always be there to sustain the budget.

After the Session ended last Thursday, Republicans spoke out about the 30 days in a post Session press conference ([link removed])

Meantime, one Republican lawmaker voiced her opinion after the Session: “We’re declaring war." ([link removed]) Those were the words of Rep. Jane Powdrell-Culbert (R)-Corrales who said volumes about how GOP lawmakers are approaching the November elections. The GOP is ready to turn the legislature red.

HOMELESSNESS CRISIS IN ALBUQUERQUE IGNORED BY STATE

With a billion dollar plus surplus heading into the Legislative Session, the progressive Democrats decided not to address Albuquerque's serious homeless problem, a crisis that's received national attention. More than 5,500 people experience homelessness in Albuquerque annually. Talk about your spending priorities--or lack of. The Duke City had asked the governor and legislature to appropriate $14 million for its proposed homeless shelter. The left-leaning Dems coughed up a mere $50,000. This, after city voters agreed to fork up a matching $14 million. A sad commentary on our Democrat-controlled Roundhouse.

ALBUQUERQUE POLICE INVESTIGATING THREE MURDERS THIS PAST WEEKEND

There doesn't seem to be a stop to the homicides in New Mexico's biggest city. After a record number of murders last year and city promises to address the problem, the crisis continues. There have been 13 homicides this year. That's ahead of the pace from last year! This past weekend saw three fatal shootings in Albuquerque in just over 26 hours. No real solutions yet, and those progressive Democrats this past Session refused to tackle this problem. Remember what the governor said at her State of the State? "

"We have a chance in this Session to come together as a state and put together the best practices, to be smart and tough on crime"

Sure.

Nothing came out of this Session to stop this epidemic.

ICYMI: SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN PUBLISHED AN EDITORIAL SLAMMING RPNM CHAIRMAN PEARCE OVER THE FACTS SURROUNDING AN ELECTION BILL--BUT IT WAS THE WRITER WHO GOT HIS FACTS WRONG.

Santa Fe New Mexican columnist Milan Simonich last week wrote a scathing editorial accusing the Party of wrongly interpreting an election bill. House Bill 229 clearly eliminated the need for three forms of identification for voters using absentee ballots. This, in turn, could lead to voter fraud. Simonich criticized the Chairman and Party, claiming this wasn't true, and that the Party "needs a refresher course in reading comprehension."

RPNM contacted Simonich, who responded back. He referred us to a section in the bill that discussed absentee ballot APPLICATIONS, not the ballots themselves. There's a difference.

He was wrong. He had misread the bill himself. We explained his mistake, but the columnist didn't write back.

The newspaper refused to offer a retraction for his mistake.

Here's the editorial. ([link removed]) Simonich doesn't get it.

Here's a piece from blogger John Block. ([link removed]) He gets it.

Read below, and it's crystal clear. (Thankfully, the bill was tabled).
