We helped pass Texas State Bill HB3, effective on September 1st, providing the first statewide legislation to require armed security on every public-school campus. Some schools continue to wrestle with legislators on the budget allocated to implement this new law, the first of its kind, to make this dream a reality.
Regardless, Texas is on its way to providing the best school shooting deterrent parents could ask for this fall!
It’s been 24 years since the Columbine High School Massacre. Now, 24 years later, the Washington Post is reporting that over 380 school shootings have occurred since Columbine, and the highest rate occurred last year with 46 shootings. We must ACT!
As an emergency measure, several states have passed legislation allowing trained school faculty to concealed carry a firearm on school campus, but this is not the professionally trained emergency response we need to properly stop an active shooter.
As many as 30 states have laws allowing armed faculty on campus and 16 states + DC ban the use of firearms by faculty including Alabama, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
80% of Americans strongly support armed police presence on public school campuses. There is an overwhelming majority of support for armed police backed by 94% of Republicans, 78% of independents, and 70% of Democrats.
Where we find division on public support is on the prospect of arming school faculty, with 72% of Republican support, 42% of Independents, and only 24% of Democrats. Considering the rising crime rates including student assaults against teachers, arming faculty on some school campuses can be a very risky prospect.
We want to thank every Texan for their support and participation and urge you all to stay on top of your school systems implementation of this new law.
Join the Movement and help your state to pass similar legislation!
We must stand up for our nation’s children and insist lawmakers SECURE OUR SCHOOLS!
Never again can we allow a school shooter to take an innocent life!
