Friend,

As we celebrate Black History Month, I wanted to share my thoughts as we look to begin a bold new chapter in Georgia and our nation’s history.

My name is Billye Aaron. For many years, my husband Henry (Hank) and I have been deeply involved in the work of the NAACP, as well as initiatives to lift up and educate children in Atlanta and across the country. This work has been my inspiration.

I have had the extraordinary privilege of being an Atlanta public school teacher and an educator at some of Atlanta’s historically black colleges and universities — Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Morris Brown College, where I’ve met brilliant young minds with a vision to change and improve the world.

The energy I feel today, and what I see happening across our state, reminds me of a time when I was younger, when civil rights leaders and political leaders bent the arc of our country’s history toward greater equality and fundamental rights for all.

We face many of the same obstacles now as we did then. Voting rights are under attack. Fair housing, employment, and a college education remain a struggle for too many people, following a Great Recession from which they have yet to fully recover.

But the people are ready for a change. In this election, powered by a multigenerational, multiracial movement, we can make good on the promises that politicians have so often made but too rarely delivered. Voting rights, healthcare, good wages, the right to organize, educating our children, and honoring our teachers all depend on what we do now.
I know that Teresa can deliver on these priorities, but we’ve got to have her back. That is why I am proud to support her, and I hope you will too.

Because Teresa does not accept corporate PAC money, she’s relying on grassroots support to power her campaign — and that is why we can trust her to fight for us. Join me in contributing to her campaign today.
