John,
As you may know, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is set to consider overturning an injunction <[link removed]> that has prevented San Francisco from clearing the encampments of individuals who refuse housing and services provided by the City. This injunction is standing in the way of the city’s progress on the issue and has had a significant impact particularly on our small businesses and neighborhoods that have been negatively affected by the presence of these encampments.
San Francisco always leads with offers of shelter, but when people refuse to accept these offers, they shouldn’t be allowed to remain on the street. The reasons people refuse help can be complicated, but that isn’t an excuse for allowing people to remain on our streets when we have a place for them to go.
I want to thank City Attorney David Chiu and his team for fighting this injunction. He and I agree that we must approach this issue with compassion, balancing the safety and well-being of our community with protecting the rights and dignity of our unhoused neighbors. However, this injunction is blocking our work to move people off the street and sidewalks and into shelter and services.
Take action to overturn this injunction by joining me, Supervisors Mandelman, Dorsey, and Engardio at a rally tomorrow (Wednesday).
