John,
Karen Lauritzen won Idaho’s Teacher of the Year award, and expected for 2023 to be her best teaching year. But now she’s leaving.
After the award was announced last September, Lauritzen has been the target of right-wing extremists who accuse her of being a left-wing activist who promotes transgenderism to her fourth grade students.
Lauritzen is not alone. Public school teacher resignations are on the rise, worsening our already-serious teacher shortage as school districts struggle to hire new teachers.
“I think that’s a big part of why teachers are leaving — they don’t feel valued,” Lauritzen said. “And if you can’t pay them well, they at least need to feel that you value their judgment, they’re doing good things, and [they] have children’s best interest at heart. And when you take all that away — what’s left?”
The GOP has nothing good to offer in terms of policy. So they double down on culture wars to distract from their utter inability to govern.
We’re asking too much of teachers. In addition to teaching our kids, they suffer inadequate funding for supplies and equipment, have to navigate a minefield of harmful culture wars – and are even required to shield their students from bullets, should the unthinkable occur in their classrooms.
And what has the GOP done? They’ve come for LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights, but won’t lift a finger to try and stop assault weapons from being easily obtained.
No wonder teachers are leaving in droves.
As an Idahoan and a father, I’m heartbroken to see that even Idaho’s Teacher of the Year is not immune from being targeted by the extremism that has overtaken the GOP.
As a voter, I’m disgusted that our representatives won’t speak out against this radicalism – or worse, that they enable and encourage it!
Can you make a contribution to my campaign to flip ID-02 today and send a message that we won’t stand silent in the face of hate?
