Friends,
Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults has had a family member killed by a gun, including homicide and suicide, according to a recent survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
This sobering report encapsulates the tragic trend of a growing gun violence epidemic that has become deadlier than ever in our country.
According to data from the CDC, there were nearly 49,000 gun-related deaths in 2021 -- an unprecedented surge of 23% over two years during the COVID-19 pandemic. Guns have been the leading cause of death among children and teens in the U.S. since 2020, surpassing car accidents.
In no other comparable country are firearms even within the top four causes of mortality among children.
And the deaths themselves don’t even tell the full story: The psychological impact compounds the tragedy, with almost a quarter of parents of children under 18 saying they worry about gun violence daily or almost daily.
We need to come to grips with the fact that gun violence is a major blight on the American cultural landscape. And whether by suicide, homicide, mass shooting, or any other gun-related incident, no one is immune from the effects of gun violence.
This scourge must end.
I continue to believe that the U.S. Congress can and should play a role in stopping gun violence. And while I fully understand that there are immense political obstacles to getting something done, I’m still committed to fighting.
So if you’re with me in the fight to put forward real actions and solutions, please add your name to my petition and urge everyone in Congress to fight for meaningful change.
Thanks for staying committed to this cause,
Tim Kaine
