From day one, our campaign has been about sticking it to criminals. That means we help our next sheriff and police departments to put criminals in jail and keep them there. As DA, we will do that by:
* Fire-walling our stateline and sending a clear message to criminals that DeSoto County is not their playground. Criminals can stay in Memphis or go to prison, but the days of threatening our property values and livelihoods will be over.

* Defending our defenders by fighting for them and defending the decisions they make to deter crime, so they can do their job of protecting and serving our citizens.

* Stopping dangerous drugs like fentanyl from pouring into our communities and devastating families. That is why I will issue a moratorium against illegal drugs and drug dealers in DeSoto County on day one, and work in total cooperation with various departments to stop drug use and distribution inside our county.

* Advocating for stricter DUI and prosecution standards. Mississippi’s convoluted and outdated DUI laws put families at risk. Loop holes exist for repeat offenders that enables them to avoid some of the harsher penalties for felony driving under the influence arrests. While it is up to the legislature to pass laws, I will work closely with our delegation to help re-write stricter DUI laws for adoption at our State Capitol so those on the road are safe.

* Protecting parental rights. Our children are our greatest asset. That is why, I will stand with parents to ensure they remain the primary decision-makers for their family in DeSoto County.

* Accelerating justice and better serve victims by modernizing the office to run like a business, and speed up the wheels of justice. The days of victims waiting several years for closure and justice to be served (sometimes three and half years) will end.

* Increasing transparency by increasing communication between the office and the public, so we can stay informed on matters of public interest, and see our tax dollars in action.

I appreciate the role our law enforcement officials play in keeping our communities safe, and I am committed to working with them to deal with crime and put the perpetrators behind bars. August 8th is almost here, and I humbly ask for your vote of confidence in my plan to punish criminals and protect our honest, hardworking citizens.

Meet Matthew Barton

Matthew Barton grew up in Petal, Mississippi in a blue-collar family. His mother was a director at Tupperware and his father owned the small, family business – Barton Fence Company – where Matthew worked growing up.

After attending public school, Matthew attended Pearl River Community College and Warner University, where he studied Business Administration. He holds a law degree from Ole Miss Law, where he graduated Cum Laude and received the interviewing and counseling award.

In 2011, Matthew married his high school sweetheart, Megan. After graduating from Ole Miss Law in 2015, they moved to DeSoto County where Matthew started a law firm and Megan continued working at the Desoto County Schools as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.

During law school, Matthew served as an intern in the DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office where he presented cases to grand jury, tried cases to verdict, and performed all functions of a practicing attorney. He has served as a prosecutor for the City of Southaven and the City of Horn Lake and now serves as a special prosecutor for Southaven, Horn Lake, and DeSoto County Justice Courts – where he’s established a strict, tough on crime reputation.

As an attorney, Mathew has dealt with every type of criminal matter ranging from DUI to capital murder, in more than 37 courts across Mississippi.

Matthew is a member of the Federalist Society, a conservative legal association, an enhanced conceal carry permit holder, Krewe of Hernando member, NRA member, and donates his time serving as a pro bono attorney to Veterans every year.

Today, Matthew, his wife Megan, and their daughter Eleanor live in Hernando where Matthew owns his private law firm. Eleanor attends Pre-K at Hernando United Methodist Church and Megan is a stay at home mom after seven years with DeSoto County schools.
