Foreign Minister to welcome U.K. Foreign Secretary of State to Canada on first official bilateral visit

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that she will host Dominic Raab, U.K. Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and First Secretary of State, in Toronto on August 6, 2019.

During the visit, the two will meet one-on-one before participating in a working breakfast. Their discussions will focus on our countries’ deep historical ties, our strong enduring relationship, and the advancement of our common priorities, including democracy and human rights.

As the only two countries that are members of NATO, the G7, the G20 and the Commonwealth, Canada and the United Kingdom work closely together in support of the rules-based international order.
The U.K. is Canada’s most important commercial partner in Europe. Two-way merchandise trade in 2018 reached $25.54 billion.
On July 10 and 11, 2019, Canada and the United Kingdom co-hosted the Global Conference for Media Freedom. The outcomes included a global pledge on media freedom that commits like-minded countries to working together on identifying and acting on violations and abuses of the rights of members of the press.
Canada will host the second Global Conference for Media Freedom in 2020.
