Dear John.

You need a watchdog for your politicians, but a key protection is missing for First Nations communities and we need to change that.

The auditor general is a cornerstone for accountability.

The federal auditor general caught over $4.6 billion in CERB overpayments. And remember the sponsorship scandal? Former auditor general Sheila Fraser was front and centre in exposing that mess.

But here’s the problem: Grassroots Indigenous people don’t have an auditor general to call.

Many First Nations are doing a great job, but there are some with serious questions about accountability. And there’s no auditor general for First Nations communities.

An Indigenous auditor general would mean there’s someone to call when grassroots Indigenous activists have questions about what’s happening with their community’s money. And that means they can hold their own chief and council accountable.

Here’s the most surprising thing: both the Assembly of First Nations and Government of Canada recognize the need for an Indigenous auditor general. In 2017, they jointly commissioned a report that states: “A First Nations Auditor General would provide many benefits, both today and in the future.”

My friend Hans McCarthy is an Indigenous activist fighting for accountability at the Frog Lake First Nation. He makes it crystal clear: “If First Nations want to have the kind of businesses that Warren Buffett invests in, we have to have those protections.”

Thanks for standing up and fighting for taxpayers – It’s making a difference!

PS: Everybody knows an Indigenous auditor general is a good idea, but politicians will only make it happen if they’re pushed. It only takes a minute to sign the petition.
