Hi folks,

We know we've been dealing with some extreme heat this summer. That's why I met with President Joe Biden virtually to announce action to protect communities from extreme heat.

Here are some of the things we are doing locally:

  • Creating a network of cooling centers and distributing cooling kits to at-risk individuals.
  • Creating the Cool Callers program, where volunteers check on vulnerable residents.
  • Investing in one of the world's largest cool pavement programs, where a lighter color coating is applied to city streets.
  • Planting trees, including developing a Residential Tree Equity Accelerator to plant 20,000 trees across 25 neighborhoods.
  • Distributing heat relief grants to engage nonprofits and faith organizations.
  • Establishing the nation's first publicly funded municipal heat office to coordinate solutions.

Phoenix continues to be at the front lines of climate change. Our city employees and volunteers are working diligently to keep residents safe through targeted outreach.

I appreciate President Biden's support, which includes help for residents to pay energy bills and invest in energy efficiency to lower those bills.  I have been working to pass legislation so that FEMA can recognize extreme heat as an eligible category for federal disaster aid.

Thank you to everyone who has been working to get us through this hot summer.

Stay cool,
