John, do you remember November 13th, 2018?
That’s the day when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Sunrise Movement and Justice Democrats in a sit-in protest in Nancy Pelosi’s office to stand against inaction from the political establishment in addressing the climate crisis.
The 2018 IPCC Report had shown that we only have until 2030 to take significant climate change action before we reach irreversible damage. That’s why AOC joined a sit-in with Sunrise Movement and us as a newly elected member of Congress who took on the machine and won.
We were there with her during the sit-in because we were committed to showing what it meant to use the power you have as a federally elected leader to transform the conversation. Electoral politics means nothing without a sustained social movement ready to build, demonstrate, and wield real power to hold our elected officials accountable for governing.
Today, the impact of the climate crisis is even more readily apparent. It’s even more urgent that we pass and implement a Green New Deal to save the planet before it’s too late.
Working-class, grassroots leadership means that when you enter the halls of power, you bring the people with you. Alexandria showed what JD leadership can look like on the inside. Now we have to work to elect another slate of JD candidates to serve with her and the entire JD bloc in Congress.
Our communities deserve better. We cannot continue to accept the status quo.
Thank you for being in this fight with us.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
