Legislative Watch

Property Tax Watch

A landmark $18 billion tax cut for property owners in the state is on Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk after a deal that drew near-unanimous support from legislators. A constitutional amendment will also be on the November 2023 ballot.

For a home valued at $330,000—the average in Texas—lawmakers said that's worth about $1,300 in savings annually.

The plan includes reducing school tax rates, increasing homestead and franchise exemptions, and creating temporary appraisal caps. The State would make up the difference in what schools would have received.

The bill says it will take effect for the 2023 tax year, so you will see the changes reflected on your next tax bill.
